YugaByte Database Engineer

Role Overview

We are seeking a YugabyteDB Database Engineer (DBE) to serve as the core L3/L4 technical expert for our Engineering - Open Source Database Support team. Reporting directly to CTO / VP Engineering, you will be responsible for solving the most complex database problems faced by production customers.

Key Responsibilities

• Advanced Troubleshooting (L3/L4): Diagnose and resolve complex issues in YugabyteDB clusters, including transaction contention, query regressions, tablet hotspots, replication lag, compaction stalls, and connection saturation.
• Performance Optimization: Tune queries, schemas, sharding/indexing strategies, and configurations to maximize efficiency. Utilize EXPLAIN ANALYZE on the YSQL layer.
• Architecture & Design Support: Collaborate with Solution Architects on data models, primary key/sharding design, indexing, HA/DR approaches (including xCluster synchronous/asynchronous replication), and geo-distributed deployments.
• Incident Resolution: Manage escalation points for production incidents under 24/7 SLA pressure. Participate in on-call rotations to ensure rapid root cause analysis and fixes.
• CVE Patching & Knowledge Sharing: Apply security patches, document best practices, contribute to playbooks, and mentor junior engineers.

Bonus Areas

Demonstrable skills in DevOps (Kubernetes), infrastructure automation, secure configuration compliance, or contributions to upstream open-source projects are highly valued. Experience with other distributed SQL/OLTP databases (e.g., CockroachDB, TiDB) or OLAP systems (Apache Druid, StarRocks) is a plus.

Requirements

• Experience: 5+ years hands-on experience operating and troubleshooting YugabyteDB clusters in large-scale production environments. Application usage only does not suffice; deep expertise required.

• Distributed Systems Knowledge: Solid understanding of consistency, Raft consensus, replication, failover, and scaling concepts.

• Tech Stack: Comfortable with Linux systems, networking basics, SQL (PostgreSQL experience strongly preferred due to YugabyteDB's YSQL compatibility).

Working Style

We offer a remote-first environment where you will collaborate across time zones. This role requires regular overlap with European and North American business hours.
