Technical Manager

Lepton Software is seeking a Technical Manager with robust software architecture expertise to lead the technical vision, system design, and implementation of complex GIS-driven platforms. This is a hands-on role requiring architectural leadership to design scalable systems, guide multiple engineering teams, and ensure technical excellence throughout the development lifecycle. The Technical Manager will serve as the ultimate technical authority for solution design, mentoring senior engineers and tech leads.

Key Responsibilities:

Architecture and Technical Ownership

• Spearhead end-to-end system architecture for large-scale GIS and location intelligence platforms.
• Design scalable, secure, and high-performance systems spanning backend, frontend, data, and geospatial domains.
• Establish architecture standards, design patterns, and best practices for all engineering teams.
• Approve solution designs, data models, APIs, and infrastructure plans.

Engineering Leadership

• Lead and mentor tech leads and senior engineers across various teams.
• Foster engineering excellence through rigorous code reviews, design reviews, and technical audits.
• Strategically manage technical debt and feature delivery to ensure long-term platform stability.
• Contribute to hiring, onboarding, and professional development of engineering talent.

Delivery and Execution

• Collaborate with product and delivery managers, and clients to translate business requirements into robust technical solutions.
• Oversee technical estimations, feasibility studies, and risk management.
• Ensure production readiness, performance optimization, and system reliability.
• Act as the primary escalation point for complex production issues and architectural challenges.

Innovation and Platform Evolution

• Stay abreast of emerging trends in GIS, backend systems, frontend frameworks, cloud technologies, and AI.
• Drive the adoption of new technologies and tools that deliver tangible business value.
• Contribute to shaping the company's long-term platform and product architecture roadmap.

Required Skills:

• Extensive experience with PostgreSQL and PostGIS, including spatial modeling, indexing, and query optimization.
• Proven experience building backend systems with Python, Java, or Go, including API-first designs and distributed workflows.
• Demonstrated ability to design distributed systems, microservices, and scalable architectures.
• Solid understanding of React and TypeScript, along with modern frontend architecture principles.
• Strong knowledge of system design principles: scalability, fault tolerance, observability, and security.
• Experience leading engineering teams in enterprise or service-oriented environments.
• Exceptional communication, documentation, and stakeholder management skills.

Desirable Skills:

• Experience with Rust or other high-performance programming languages.
• Hands-on experience with GIS formats and tools (GeoJSON, WKT, raster/tiles, vector pipelines).
• Familiarity with map rendering and visualization tools (Mapbox, Deck.gl, Leaflet, OpenLayers).
• Experience with containerization and orchestration technologies (Docker, Kubernetes) and cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure).
• Exposure to asynchronous systems and data orchestration tools (Airflow, Redis, Celery, Kafka).
• Experience integrating with location APIs (Google Maps, OpenStreetMap, HERE, Mapbox).
• Awareness of AI/ML applications in geospatial workflows.
