System Engineer AppPkg_Scripting

About the Role

Magna IT is seeking a skilled System Engineer specializing in application packaging and automated software deployment. This role is crucial for managing and optimizing our application deployment processes using Microsoft Intune and Matrix42 Empirum. You will be responsible for ensuring the quality and efficiency of application packaging, managing Windows-based shopfloor systems via Empirum, and enhancing our cross-platform remote control solution, FastViewer.

A key aspect of this position is driving automation and operational improvements through robust PowerShell scripting, contributing to a more streamlined and modern workplace IT environment.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop, maintain, and manage the lifecycle of application packages (Win32/MSI/MSIX) for deployment through Microsoft Intune and Matrix42 Empirum.
• Establish and enforce stringent packaging standards, including naming conventions, detection rules, requirements, supersedence, uninstallation procedures, and versioning, to ensure high-quality, silent, and GUI-installable applications.
• Oversee the operation and maintenance of the Empirum platform, encompassing server components, distribution, policies, inventory, and patch/application deployment for Windows-based shopfloor systems.
• Manage and advance FastViewer as the primary cross-platform remote control solution, including configuration, access management, troubleshooting, and updates.
• Design and implement automation solutions and self-service enhancements using PowerShell, covering packaging automation, system health checks, reporting, and automated remediation.
• Collaborate with application owners and IT stakeholders to define requirements, plan testing and rollouts, and manage release communications.
• Diagnose and resolve application installation issues and deployment failures on both client and backend systems, providing thorough root-cause analysis.
• Maintain comprehensive technical documentation, including packaging guides, runbooks, and standards, ensuring deployments are auditable and reproducible.
• Provide 2nd and 3rd level support for packaging and platform-related issues, working closely with global and local IT teams to ensure stable operations.
• Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives focused on standardization, automation, monitoring, and KPI/reporting across Modern Workplace services.
• Participate in on-call rotations and provide support during scheduled maintenance windows as needed.

Qualifications and Experience

Education

• A Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field is preferred.
• Completion of a technical college education is also considered.

Work Experience and Skills

• A minimum of 2-3 years of experience in application packaging and software deployment within enterprise environments using MS Intune.
• Proficiency in packaging formats and tools such as MSI, MSIX, Win32 apps, and InstallShield, with strong scripting skills for silent installations and uninstalls.
• Experience with the PS App Deployment Toolkit is advantageous.
• Solid understanding of Windows client environments (Windows 11) and the specific requirements of shopfloor systems (stability, controlled changes, minimal downtime).
• Experience operating and troubleshooting Empirum components (agents, distribution, policies, inventories, deployment logs) is a plus.
• Familiarity with remote support/remote control platforms (ideally FastViewer) and troubleshooting distributed endpoints.
• Good grasp of software deployment concepts including detection methods, dependencies, supersedence, compliance, and phased rollouts, with strong log-based troubleshooting skills.
• Excellent PowerShell scripting capabilities for automation tasks (packaging helpers, deployments, remediation scripts, reporting) and API integrations.
