Staff Software Engineer

PayPal seeks a Staff Software Engineer specializing in iOS development for its Chennai, India location. This role is crucial for leading technical initiatives, architecting complex financial applications, and driving innovation in payment experiences. The ideal candidate will act as a project or system leader, coordinating engineers, defining technical tasks, and ensuring the achievement of customer and operational objectives. You will proactively improve existing structures and processes, exercise judgment in reconciling diverse priorities, and condense repetition into generalized solutions. Collaboration with management to set and improve engineering standards is also key. This position requires a minimum of 8 years of relevant work experience and a Bachelor's degree or equivalent. We are looking for 8+ years of distinguished iOS expertise, especially in building complex financial applications and demonstrating technical innovation. You will define the technical strategy for iOS architecture, establish engineering standards, and make system-level decisions balancing security, performance, and user experience. Mastery of Swift, UIKit/SwiftUI, and iOS platform capabilities is essential. You will pioneer sophisticated solutions for complex payment flows, mentor engineering teams, and serve as the technical authority on iOS best practices. As a key individual contributor, you will strategically collaborate with cross-functional leadership, bridging business objectives and technical implementation. Responsibilities include architecting transformative payment experiences, leading critical iOS initiatives from conception to delivery, mentoring teams, influencing product roadmaps and technical strategy, establishing iOS architecture patterns and quality frameworks, driving innovation through prototypes, championing complex refactoring, and resolving systemic technical challenges. A Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science or a related technical field is required. We seek exceptional expertise in Swift, deep understanding of iOS internals, memory management, and performance optimization, a proven track record of architecting complex iOS applications, experience implementing secure payment flows and financial data handling, advanced knowledge of UI/UX, accessibility, and internationalization, strong background in test automation and CI/CD, and the ability to influence technical decisions across organizational boundaries. Outstanding communication skills are vital for translating complex technical concepts.
