Staff Software Engineer

Join Karat's Engineering team as a Staff Software Engineer in Bengaluru, India, and contribute to building the world's most predictive, inclusive, and fair interviewing products for clients and candidates.

As a Staff Software Engineer, you will spearhead the most complex, cross-team technical initiatives, significantly shaping the direction of our engineering organization. You will drive substantial architectural improvements to our platform, establish the technical vision for critical systems, and represent Karat's technical expertise in client interactions. Your role will involve building trust, influencing product direction, and ensuring our key relationships are built on strong technical credibility. Your impact will extend beyond code, influencing how the entire engineering organization operates.

This position requires a work schedule that overlaps with U.S. business hours.

• Integrate AI-assisted development into your daily workflow and guide the team's adoption of emerging techniques to enhance Karat's engineering practices at scale.
• Lead the design and execution of complex, cross-team technical projects, adeptly managing ambiguity, aligning stakeholders, and driving projects to production, even with evolving product roadmaps.
• Take ownership of significant components of Karat's technical stack, proactively identifying and proposing enhancements to improve developer experience and end-user satisfaction.
• Architect major changes to the platform, carefully evaluating trade-offs for scalability and ensuring decisions support both immediate requirements and long-term organizational health.
• Act as a technical ambassador to clients, fostering trust, shaping product strategy, and grounding client relationships in robust technical understanding.
• Mentor and develop engineers across various levels, cultivating a culture of technical excellence and continuous learning.
• Promote best practices in engineering, including testing strategies, performance optimization, and technical debt management throughout the organization.

Required Experience:

• Over 10 years of professional experience in architecting and delivering large-scale, complex web applications and distributed systems in production, with a proven history of organizational-level technical impact.
• In-depth knowledge of modern programming languages such as Ruby, Python, React, and TypeScript/JavaScript, alongside mastery of web frameworks, design patterns, and system design principles at scale.
• Expert-level experience with microservices architecture, database optimization, and designing scalable APIs (REST and GraphQL).
• Extensive experience with cloud infrastructure, DevOps methodologies, and scalable deployment technologies (AWS, GCP, or Azure).
• Demonstrated technical leadership across teams and initiatives, with a successful track record of driving organizational-level technical improvements.
• Comfort engaging directly with clients or external stakeholders, with the ability to clearly articulate complex technical concepts and build trust in client-facing scenarios.
• An interest in technical interviewing, talent assessment, or the edtech sector is highly advantageous.

This role is exclusively for candidates residing in Bengaluru, Karnataka. While the team works remotely, we are currently focusing hiring efforts within this specific location. Applications from other Indian cities will not be considered at this time.
