About The Role

Merchandising Data Science builds automated decision engines and support systems that drive high-stakes merchandising decisions, including item selection, inventory allocation, flow optimization, pricing strategies, and competitive analysis. As a Staff Data Scientist, you will own a single, hard problem end-to-end—transforming rough business questions into precise formulations and production-ready systems.

What You Will Do

• End-to-End Ownership: Define decision variables, objective functions, constraints, and fallback behaviors for problems like estimating price elasticities or reducing forecast error for seasonal items.
• Solution Design: Determine whether a problem requires an automated engine or human-augmented support system using optimization, heuristics, simulation, forecasting, or causal inference.
• Production Systems: Build robust systems integrated with merchandising and planning platforms rather than prototypes.
• Metric & Validation: Establish quality standards and run experiments to prove improvements in accuracy, margin, sell-through, or adoption rates.
• Influence & Standards: Create reusable components and documentation so progress continues independently. Mentor others on judgment and standards without direct reports.
• AI-Driven Development: Leverage AI tools for speed while maintaining high correctness bars.
