Staff Backend Engineer

About the Role

As a Staff Software Engineer on the DAP Repository Flows team within GitLab's Duo Agent Platform (DAP), you will set technical direction for autonomous agents that operate on customer codebases and refine project onboarding experiences.

Your Responsibilities

• Determine architecture and implementation strategies for AI-powered automation flows.
• Lead the design of autonomous, scheduled agents working within a distributed environment.
• Partner across teams to align interfaces, shared patterns, and platform capabilities.
• Mentor engineers and elevate technical quality through rigorous code review and problem-solving.

Requirements

We seek deep Ruby/Rails production experience, proven integration of LLMs into products (not model training), and a track record building high-scale agentic systems. You must excel in async-first collaboration and distributed environments to drive technical direction across the organization.
