Staff Backend Engineer

About the Role

The Staff Backend Engineer owns the critical application and API services layer: the gateway through which all platform computations reach end-users.

Key Responsibilities:

• Own multi-tenant APIs: Design robust service contracts between the application, computation, data, and AI layers. Maintain strict versioning to ensure smooth evolution without breaking consumers across different deployment timelines.
• Build review and approval workflows: Create secure processes for finance teams to accept results, challenge findings, or send them back. This is where trust is earned in financial operations.
• Maintain multi-tenant isolation: Own authentication, authorization, and role-based access control at the service layer. Ensure cross-tenant leakage is impossible by architectural design rather than convention.
• Build comprehensive audit trails: Guarantee that every user-facing figure links back to its computation source. Support enterprise security reviews required for Fortune 500 finance customers before purchase or deployment.
• Deploy multi-cloud solutions: Build services ready for customer-hosted environments with strong isolation and no data egress, supporting AWS, Azure, and GCP architectures.
• Optimize performance and reliability: Own the operational health of your services. Be able to pinpoint exactly why requests are slow or fail rather than guessing.
• Mentor engineering teams: Set backend patterns, review designs, and guide mid-to-senior engineers while partnering with data, AI, and product on cross-layer service architecture.

Requirements:

• 7+ years in backend forward deployment engineering with significant Staff-level experience owning complex production services.
• Demonstrated ownership of services in multi-cloud SaaS environments with guaranteed isolation.
• An obsession with correctness, traceability, and audit integrity as a first-class requirement.
• Strong API design skills including versioning, contracts, backward compatibility, and evolution without disruption.
• Practical security engineering expertise: authentication, authorization, tenant isolation (Python).
