About the Role
An Overview of This Position
We are seeking a Staff Backend Engineer to join the Database Excellence group at GitLab. You will build and evolve database automation and PostgreSQL as a service capabilities, using Go to automate the full lifecycle of PostgreSQL across our infrastructure.
- Build high-throughput, always-on services that make database operations safer and more consistent for internet-scale workloads (GitLab.com).
- Create SQL Traffic Replay Tooling to validate upgrades against real production traffic.
- Safely automate major version upgrades at GitLab scale without growing the ops team linearly.
What You'll Do
Design and maintain Go-based automation for PostgreSQL lifecycle management (provisioning, configuration, failover, scaling). Integrate compute, storage, networking, and IAM into one coherent platform. Evaluate operator-based approaches to replace bespoke setups with standardized services.
- Leverage AI agents regularly in your workflow while maintaining full context within the repository.
- Ensure automation supports 8+ months of operational runway for all critical database saturation points.
- Take ownership of technical direction, turning ambiguous problems into sequenced architectures executable by several engineers.
