Coupang is seeking an experienced and passionate Staff Backend Engineer to join our Fraud Prevention and Detection System (FDPS) team in Bengaluru. This role is pivotal in championing the design and development of our services, driving alignment with leadership and stakeholders, influencing and building trust across teams, and ensuring the delivery of complex, scalable, and reliable systems.

What You Will Do

• Lead the architectural design of scalable, extensible, and reliable systems within the FDPS.
• Develop systems that leverage AI/ML and LLM technologies to prevent fraud with sub-second latency.
• Align technology roadmaps with leadership and stakeholders.
• Identify and resolve technical blockers, simplifying complex problems into actionable solutions.
• Decompose complex challenges into straightforward solutions, enabling teams to prioritize effectively and act with urgency.
• Contribute to coding efforts when necessary to guide teams and support high-priority initiatives.
• Identify business and technological opportunities, evaluating and adopting new technologies.
• Recruit, mentor, and grow top-tier engineering talent.

Basic Qualifications

• 10-12+ years of experience in software development, with a proven track record of delivering large-scale, impactful systems.
• 4+ years of experience building and operating backend services and AI/ML inference architectures.
• Deep expertise in distributed systems, storage, data processing, and server technologies, with a strong emphasis on operational excellence (latency, throughput, high availability).
• Proficiency in Java and Spring Framework, with strong object-oriented design skills.
• Demonstrated experience in improving code quality.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with AWS-based service development and operations.
• Familiarity with Kafka, Spark/EMR, and Hive for streaming and computation-heavy systems.
• Experience with ORM tools (JPA, Hibernate) and domain modeling.
• Knowledge of NoSQL, relational/columnar, and Graph databases.
• Proficiency with Git, CI/CD automation, and Agile methodologies.
• Experience in logistics-related service development is a plus.

Work Model

Hybrid: Coupang's hybrid work model promotes collaboration and enriches employee experience. Employees are expected to work at least 3 days per week in the office, with the flexibility for 2 days of remote work, depending on role requirements. Some roles may require more in-office time.
