Software Engineer II

Mastercard is seeking a skilled Site Reliability Engineer (SRE) to join our team in Pune, Maharashtra. In this role, you will be instrumental in operating, scaling, and continuously enhancing our on-premise OpenShift platform, which is built on VMware infrastructure. Key Responsibilities:

• Administer and maintain on-premise OpenShift clusters hosted on VMware, ensuring optimal reliability, stability, and performance.
• Conduct in-depth OpenShift administration, including health checks, upgrades, lifecycle management, and issue resolution.
• Collaborate closely with VMware virtualization layers (compute, storage, networking) to support and optimize the platform's performance.
• Identify recurring operational patterns and implement automation solutions to enhance efficiency, consistency, and reliability.
• Troubleshoot and resolve complex platform and infrastructure issues spanning Kubernetes, networking, storage, and virtualization.
• Ensure platform services consistently meet defined availability, performance, and service level objectives.
• Actively participate in incident management, conduct root cause analysis, and implement follow-up improvements.
• Partner with application teams, architects, and stakeholders to facilitate smooth and reliable workload onboarding and operations.
• Contribute to achieving operational excellence, fostering continuous improvement, and promoting platform standardization.
• Engage in agile development methodologies, including daily stand-ups, retrospectives, and planning sessions.
• Develop and maintain comprehensive documentation, runbooks, and operational procedures.

What We Are Looking For:

Core Skills & Mindset:

• A minimum of 3 years of experience managing on-premise Kubernetes platforms, with a preference for Red Hat OpenShift.
• Extensive hands-on experience in OpenShift administration and day-to-day operations.
• A strong understanding of on-premise virtualization, particularly VMware (compute, storage, and networking).
• A self-driven engineer who embraces ownership of platform reliability and improvement initiatives.
• Proficient analytical and problem-solving abilities with a systematic approach to investigations.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• A natural inclination towards automation, standardization, and continuous enhancement.
• Comfort working within structured, repeatable operational frameworks while actively seeking automation opportunities.

Technical Experience (Preferred):

• Experience with Infrastructure as Code and automation tools such as Ansible, Terraform, or similar.
• Familiarity with CI/CD tools like Jenkins.
• Proficiency in containerization technologies like Docker and Kubernetes.
• Experience with secrets management tools, such as HashiCorp Vault.
• Knowledge of artifact repositories like Artifactory.
• Experience with observability and monitoring tools including Prometheus, Grafana, ELK/Loki, Splunk, or Dynatrace.
• Scripting capabilities in Bash, Python, or Go.
• Understanding of high-availability, scalability, and resilience patterns.
• Exposure to public cloud Kubernetes platforms (EKS, AKS) is considered an advantage.
• Relevant Kubernetes certifications (CKA, CKAD, CKS) are a plus.
