About The Role
Databento is seeking a mid-level or senior individual contributor to join our core engineering team. This position combines ownership of the Java client library with hands-on development of performance-critical systems in C and C++.
- You will maintain a reliable, developer-friendly library while building infrastructure that processes large volumes of financial market data at extremely low latency.
Who We Are Looking For
This role is designed for an engineer who thrives on systems programming, performance optimization, and creating software solutions that other developers can seamlessly integrate into their applications. The position offers the opportunity to work with petabyte-scale datasets while optimizing codebases handling millions of messages per second at speeds up to 40+ gigabits.
Key Responsibilities
- Own and maintain the Java client library, ensuring it is robust, well-tested, and straightforward for external developers to integrate.
- Design, develop, and maintain high-performance server applications in C and C++.
- Build message parsers and feed handlers for direct market data feeds from trading venues.
- Optimize the codebase for high throughput with nanosecond-level latency measurements.
- Develop tools and libraries for processing and analyzing petabyte-scale datasets.
- Collaborate with systems teams to establish best practices for build processes, deployment strategies, and CI/CD pipelines.
- Implement monitoring solutions to improve application uptime and support smooth feature rollouts.
Prefired Background & Qualifications
- At least 5 years of full-time software engineering experience, preferably within a trading firm, technology company, or high-growth startup.
- Strong proficiency in both C/C++ and Java.
- Familiarity with open-source practices including release management, versioning, changelogs, issue triage, and backward compatibility.
- In-depth knowledge of systems programming, algorithms, data structures, multithreading, networked I/O, serialization, CPU architecture, kernels, and compilers.
- Experience working in multiprocess environments with debugging tools such as lldb or gdb.
- Strong communication skills and a reliable work ethic essential for remote workplace success.
