Software Engineer - Backend (Java) at PayPal, Bengaluru
About the Role
Join PayPal's Voice Platform team in Bengaluru and play a key role in delivering exceptional Voice and IVR experiences for our customers. You will collaborate with experienced engineers to design, build, test, release, monitor, and provide live support for Agentic AI voice agents and intricate multi-tiered software features. Success in this role requires strong technical acumen, a proactive mindset, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team.
Meet the Team
The Voice Platform team is dedicated to building and enabling next-generation Agentic AI voice agents designed to delight both internal and external customers. You will have the opportunity to collaborate with talented peers across engineering and product teams, contributing to high-impact projects within an agile environment.
Essential Responsibilities
- Implement tasks within the Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC) under the guidance of senior staff.
- Adhere to well-established internal conventions and standard procedures.
- Understand and apply internal standards and processes to make informed technical decisions.
- Collaborate with peers, managers, and project leads to grasp task requirements and review proposed solutions.
- Potentially contribute to code and design reviews.

Minimum Qualifications
- 1+ years of relevant experience and a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field, OR any equivalent combination of education and experience.

Your Day-to-Day
As an Engineer - Backend, you will contribute to building robust backend systems. You will work closely with experienced engineers to learn and advance your skills.
- Develop and maintain backend components.
- Write clean, efficient code that adheres to established coding standards.
- Participate actively in code reviews and provide constructive feedback.
Skills and Experience
- 2+ years of backend development experience and a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field.
- A strong foundation in programming concepts and data structures.
- Proficiency in at least one backend language such as Java, Python, or Ruby on Rails.
- Expertise in back-end development using Java EE technologies, including Java, application servers, servlet containers, JMS, JPA, Spring MVC, and Hibernate.
- A solid understanding of web services and Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) standards, including REST, OAuth, and JSON, with practical experience in Java environments.
- Experience with ORM (Object-Relational Mapper) tools, particularly within Java-based solutions like Hibernate.
- Experience working with both SQL and NoSQL databases.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience developing and maintaining large-scale, high-performance systems.
- Familiarity with the payment processing industry and relevant regulations.
- Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, GCP, or Azure.
- Contributions to open-source projects are a plus.
