Full Job Description
As a Staff Backend Engineer at Agoda (Staff - Level 4), you will own the design and reliability of critical services powering our global travel platform.
About Our Team
We build high-scale, fault-tolerant distributed systems in inventory, pricing, booking, payments, and customer platforms. Our systems demand high availability, low latency, and zero-downtime using Scala, Go, Java, Kotlin, Kafka, Aerospike, CI/CD, and advanced observability.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, build, and own scalable distributed microservices end-to-end.
- Lead development of complex features within your service or team domain.
- Drive system design, API architecture, and engineering best practices.
- Optimize high-throughput systems for performance and reliability.
- Mentor engineers with a structured approach to support their growth.
- Proactively identify risks and drive resolution without waiting for assignment.
We're Looking For
Technical: 8–12 years of backend experience owning distributed systems; expertise in Java/Kotlin/Scala/Go, microservices, REST APIs, SQL/NoSQL databases, and concurrency.
Beyond Technical: A track record of ownership beyond assigned tasks; comfort making decisions under ambiguity; ability to communicate trade-offs to all stakeholders; demonstrated impact mentoring engineers.
Nice to Have
- Building large-scale consumer or marketplace platforms.
- Event-driven systems (Kafka, RabbitMQ).
- NoSQL databases (Cassandra, MongoDB, Aerospike).
- AWS/GCP cloud and CI/CD pipelines experience.
