Site Reliability Engineer - Chennai, India

PayPal is seeking a dedicated Site Reliability Engineer to join our Credit Production Engineering team in Chennai, India. This role is integral to providing comprehensive 24/7 live production support for PayPal's Credit Engineering organization, supporting a diverse portfolio including Revolving Credit, Closed-Ended, and Merchant Lending products.

As part of the embedded production support team within Credit Engineering, you will contribute to our global coverage model, collaborating across APAC and North America time zones. Your responsibilities will include participating in incident response, monitoring activities, and working towards enhancing operational excellence under guidance.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Monitor and analyze system metrics to ensure the availability, performance, and reliability of digital platforms and applications.
  • Diagnose and resolve complex system issues, conduct root cause analysis, and implement sustainable fixes.
  • Develop and maintain automation scripts, tools, and processes to streamline operations and improve reliability.
  • Configure and enhance monitoring and alerting tools for actionable system health insights.
  • Analyze system usage trends and forecast resource needs for scalability.
  • Collaborate with development teams to design and implement reliable, fault-tolerant systems adhering to high availability best practices.
  • Manage CI/CD pipelines to ensure smooth and reliable software releases.
  • Conduct failure simulations (e.g., chaos engineering) to identify and mitigate system weaknesses.
  • Create and maintain detailed documentation for system configurations, operational procedures, and incident handling.
  • Partner with development, operations, and product teams to improve system architecture for performance, reliability, and scalability.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 1+ year of relevant experience and a Bachelor's degree, OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 3+ years of experience in Production Engineering, Site Reliability Engineering, or similar roles.
  • Strong debugging and problem-solving skills for complex, distributed, multi-tier applications.
  • Proven experience leading high-severity production incident resolution and cross-team coordination.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify recurring issues and drive long-term operational improvements.
  • Solid understanding of microservices architecture and SDLC, with proficiency in at least one programming language (e.g., Java, Python).
  • Hands-on experience with monitoring and alerting tools (e.g., Splunk, Datadog, Nagios, Kibana).
  • Proficiency in SQL and database management (e.g., BigQuery, Oracle, PostgreSQL).
  • Experience in cloud environments (AWS preferred).
  • Proficiency in Unix/Linux systems and shell scripting.
  • Experience with batch job schedulers or workflow orchestration tools (e.g., Control-M, Airflow, UC4).
  • Familiarity with incident management and collaboration tools (JIRA, Confluence, ServiceNow).
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with strong influencing and collaboration abilities.

Standout Qualifications (Nice to Have):

  • Experience building automation to reduce operational toil (e.g., scripting, tooling, runbook automation).
  • Experience mentoring junior engineers or leading incident reviews/postmortems.
