Senior Data Engineer - Pune, India

Tesla Asia is seeking a hands-on Senior Data Engineer to contribute to the development and evolution of Tesla’s next-generation enterprise analytics platform. This platform is crucial for driving business intelligence, operational intelligence, manufacturing insights, supply chain visibility, service telemetry, energy operations, and more, all while operating under strict SOX compliance and change management controls.

In this role, you will design, develop, and operate large-scale data infrastructure in a dynamic, high-impact environment. Your work will directly influence key areas such as vehicle production, global delivery, battery lifecycle management, Supercharger network operations, Full Self-Driving development, and energy grid optimization.

Key Responsibilities

• Architect, build, and maintain advanced Enterprise Data Warehouse/Lakehouse solutions supporting both batch and near-real-time analytics use cases.
• Design and implement robust ETL/ELT pipelines utilizing Python and modern orchestration tools like Apache Airflow.
• Develop and manage real-time data streaming and processing platforms using open-source technologies such as Apache Kafka, Apache Spark Streaming/Structured Streaming, or Flink.
• Handle sensitive financial, production, and customer data systems with strict adherence to SOX controls, segregation of duties, change management, and audit requirements.
• Collaborate closely with business stakeholders, product managers, manufacturing engineers, service operations, finance, and IT/security teams to define requirements, scope projects, and deliver high-quality solutions efficiently.
• Effectively communicate complex technical concepts and their business impact through detailed documentation, discussions, architecture diagrams, and executive presentations.
• Define, enforce, and continuously improve engineering standards, coding best practices, testing methodologies, CI/CD processes, monitoring, alerting, and quality assurance.
• Actively participate in design reviews, code walkthroughs, and pull request reviews.
• Stay abreast of evolving open-source technologies and recommend adoption where they offer significant advantages or operational efficiencies.
• Provide global 24x7 on-call support for data systems, including health monitoring, alerting, and incident resolution for ETL and streaming pipelines.

Required Qualifications

• 6+ years of professional experience in Data Engineering, Backend Engineering, or ETL development, with a focus on building large-scale data platforms.
• Strong proficiency in Python for data engineering tasks, including libraries like pandas, PySpark, and SQLAlchemy.
• Extensive hands-on experience designing and operating Apache Airflow DAGs in production environments.
• Proven production experience with at least one distributed streaming system (e.g., Kafka, Kafka Streams, Spark Streaming, Flink, Pulsar).
• Solid understanding of data modeling principles for analytical workloads.
• Experience building and operating systems under SOX compliance or similar regulated environments, including change control, audit trails, and separation of duties.
• Proficient SQL skills and understanding of distributed query engines.
• Experience with containerization (Docker) and orchestration (Kubernetes/ECS) is highly desirable.
• Excellent communication skills, with the ability to articulate technical trade-offs to engineers and business value to non-technical stakeholders.
