Senior Backend Engineer

We are seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to design and build scalable, AI-native backend services that power customer intelligence, campaign orchestration, and attribution at automotive retail scale. In this critical role, you will define hexagonal architecture patterns, own service boundaries, drive AI integration strategies, and set the engineering standards for our entire team.

Responsibilities:

• Architect Java (Spring Boot 3x) microservices using hexagonal architecture to design clean domain cores. Define port interfaces for persistence layers including MongoDB, PostgreSQL, and Cosmos DB, alongside adapter implementations for Kafka, Elasticsearch, Redis/Aerospike, and external APIs.
• Own core domain models and service boundaries end-to-end: from initial hexagonal design through production operation, managing Kafka event contracts, and driving iterative enhancements.
• Build scalable, secure REST APIs and robust Kafka-based event-driven pipelines that consume and produce events across multiple source systems efficiently.
• Design MongoDB document schemas and PostgreSQL relational schemas optimized for high-throughput, multi-tenant workloads with strict attention to indexing strategy, TTL management, and tenant isolation patterns.
• Develop Cosmos DB data models suitable for high-throughput event and state storage, defining partition key strategies, consistency levels, and TTL configurations.
• Design and implement durable campaign execution workflows using Temporal orchestration tools.
• Establish and own AI-native integration patterns including MCP tool registration, scoring model serving contracts, LLM gateway integration, and agentic workflow design.
• Identify and resolve performance bottlenecks across services, Kafka pipelines, data layers, and Elasticsearch query performance to ensure system stability.
• Ensure all systems meet rigorous reliability, scalability, and observability standards within a distributed environment.
• Mentor senior, mid-level, and junior engineers while consistently raising the engineering bar for best practices.

Requirements:

• 5+ years of backend engineering experience with a proven track record delivering production-grade Java systems.
• Deep expertise in hexagonal architecture (ports and adapters) with the ability to design domain cores fully decoupled from infrastructure layers.
• Strong proficiency in Java 21 and Spring Boot 3, focusing on event-driven, microservices-first designs.
• Solid experience with Kafka consumer groups, partition design, offset management, idempotent consumers, and complex event-driven service integration.
• Proven expertise with MongoDB: document schema design, indexing strategies, aggregation pipelines, and multi-tenant isolation patterns.
• Strong PostgreSQL skills including complex schema design, query optimization, and migration management in high-load scenarios.
• Experience with Cosmos DB or equivalent globally distributed key-value stores covering partition key design, consistency tuning, and high-throughput read/write patterns.
• Familiarity with Elasticsearch: index design, search query optimisation, and relevance tuning for large datasets.
• Solid experience with Redis or Aerospike for high-throughput caching and session/state management in distributed systems.
• Strong understanding of distributed systems concepts including service boundaries, data consistency, idempotency, retries, and circuit breaking on AWS (EKS, MSK).
