Full Job Description
We are seeking a Senior Backend Software Development Engineer (SDE 3) with profound technical acumen in developing and managing large-scale production systems. The ideal candidate will take ownership of critical microservices and data pipeline components, processing approximately 200,000 queries per second and petabytes of data daily. This role requires exceptional coding skills, robust Low-Level Design (LLD) capabilities, and comprehensive responsibility spanning component architecture, infrastructure management, and cost optimization. You will architect innovative solutions, lead technical decision-making, and drive operational excellence while consistently delivering code.
Responsibilities
- Component Ownership: Assume end-to-end responsibility for one or more critical components/services, including architecture, development, deployment, operations, and ongoing evolution.
- Technical Ownership: Oversee the complete lifecycle of assigned components, encompassing design, implementation, testing, deployment, monitoring, incident response, and continuous enhancement.
- Low-Level Design (LLD): Develop detailed technical designs for intricate systems, specifying data models, API contracts, concurrency patterns, and failure management strategies.
- Hands-on Development: Engage in daily production-grade coding; this is a hands-on role deeply integrated with the codebase, not solely focused on architecture.
- Infrastructure Ownership: Manage and operate the infrastructure supporting your components, including capacity planning, scaling initiatives, and reliability improvements.
- Cost Management: Drive cost optimization efforts for owned components, analyze expenditure, identify inefficiencies, and implement cost-effective architectural solutions.
- Scale and Performance: Design and optimize systems capable of handling over 200K QPS and petabyte-scale data processing.
- Observability: Architect and implement comprehensive monitoring, alerting, and debugging mechanisms for owned components.
- Incident Leadership: Lead incident response for your components and associated services, conduct thorough post-mortems, and implement systemic improvements.
- On-Call Excellence: Participate in on-call rotations, ensuring operational stability of components through runbooks, alerts, and dashboards.
- Technical Roadmap: Define and advance the technical roadmap for owned components, balancing feature development, technical debt reduction, and operational enhancements.
- Technical Mentorship: Provide guidance to junior and mid-level engineers on system design, code quality, and best practices for production environments.
- Cross-functional Collaboration: Partner with product, infrastructure, and other engineering teams to define requirements and deliver integrated solutions.
- Agile Execution: Deconstruct complex projects into manageable increments, delivering iteratively on a daily basis and incorporating feedback for continuous improvement.
Requirements
- Experience: 4-5+ years of experience building and managing production backend systems at scale.
- Education: Bachelor of Engineering/Technology in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience.
- Component Ownership: Proven history of owning significant components or services from inception through maturity, demonstrating comprehensive end-to-end accountability.
- Low-Level Design (LLD): Demonstrated ability to create detailed technical designs, including data structures, algorithms, API contracts, concurrency models, and failure handling.
- Programming Mastery: Expert-level proficiency in at least one modern programming language (e.g., Go, Python, Java), with a strong track record of developing maintainable and performant production code.
- Databases: Extensive hands-on experience with SQL and NoSQL database schema design, query optimization, indexing strategies, and operational troubleshooting.
- Microservices at Scale: Significant experience in building, deploying, and operating microservices designed for high throughput and large data volumes.
- Data Pipelines: Solid background in designing and managing large-scale data processing pipelines (both batch and streaming).
- Observability: Expert knowledge of metrics, logging, tracing, and alerting, with a focus on making systems easily debuggable.
- Production Operations: Substantial experience in incident response, on-call rotations, and debugging live issues under pressure.
- Infrastructure Knowledge: Hands-on experience managing infrastructure, understanding resource utilization, and performing capacity planning.
- Cost Consciousness: Experience in analyzing and optimizing infrastructure costs at scale.
- Distributed Systems: Strong foundational understanding of distributed systems, concurrency, consistency models, and potential failure scenarios.
- Accountability: A history of taking full ownership from design and deployment through ongoing operations and improvements.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with major cloud platforms (GCP, AWS, or Azure), including their cost management tools.
- Proficiency with Kubernetes and large-scale container orchestration.
- Experience with Infrastructure as Code tools (e.g., Terraform, Pulumi).
- Familiarity with streaming data systems (e.g., Kafka, Pub/Sub, Kinesis, Flink).
- Knowledge of SRE principles and reliability engineering practices.
- Experience with FinOps or infrastructure cost optimization strategies.
- Skills in performance profiling and optimization (CPU, memory, I/O).
- Demonstrated technical leadership, including team mentorship and driving cross-component initiatives.
- Contributions to open-source projects or recognized technical writing.
