Job Overview
We are seeking a talented Product Systems Design Engineer to join our team at Cummins India Limited in Pune. This role is pivotal in managing the product life cycle of automotive components and contributing to innovative design solutions.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee the entire product life cycle for automotive components.
- Leverage expert skills in Creo and Windchill for CAD design and detailing.
- Provide essential manufacturing and application engineering support.
- Apply Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) and conduct tolerance stack-up analysis.
- Utilize basic Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) knowledge.
- Collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams.
- Investigate issues within Value Package Introduction (VPI) program teams or field-based scenarios, identify root causes, propose solutions, and take ownership of design-related problem resolution.
- Implement and support design processes such as Critical Design Decisions, System Design and Validation Consideration Checklist, and Design Review, utilizing tools like iDFMEA, DVA, GD&T, CREO, and ANSYS Workbench.
- Engage with cross-functional and cross-discipline technical experts and senior designers to ensure clear communication of component and subsystem design intent.
- Support critical design decision-making processes, including concept selection, optimization, and specification definition.
- Take ownership of resolving design challenges for moderately complex components, products, systems, subsystems, or services.
- Independently execute established work processes and systems while actively developing technology and product knowledge.
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of systems and processes.
- Coordinate and direct the work of technicians and temporary student employees.
Specific Duties
- Cross-Functional Design Integration: Translate stakeholder requirements into virtual designs, clearly communicating design capabilities through approved cross-functional design reviews.
- Mechanical Design Modeling and Analysis: Create Computer-Aided Design (CAD) models adhering to Cummins standards for system design concepts, facilitating system-level analyses such as Dimensional Variation Analysis and Finite Element Analysis (FEA).
- Mechanical Design of Mechanical Systems: Apply in-depth knowledge of mechanical systems to develop innovative and robust design concepts that meet Cummins and customer expectations.
- Mechanical Design Specification: Develop comprehensive specifications, including solid models, configured engineering bills of materials, and detailed drawings, to facilitate manufacturing and inspection according to design intent.
- Product Function Modeling, Simulation, and Analysis: Influence product design decisions by utilizing and interpreting computational tools and methods to predict product functional performance against system, sub-system, and component requirements.
- System Requirements Engineering: Employ appropriate methods and tools to translate stakeholder needs into verifiable requirements, establishing acceptance criteria through analysis, allocation, and negotiation, and tracking requirements throughout the system lifecycle.
- Collaboration: Foster partnerships and work cooperatively with others to achieve shared objectives.
- Effective Communication: Develop and deliver multi-mode communications that clearly articulate understanding of diverse audience needs.

- Product Configuration and Change Management: Establish baselines for product artifacts under configuration management; manage releases, tracking, control, and communication of changes from concept to obsolescence.
- Technical Documentation: Document knowledge gained through technical activities and communicate it effectively to stakeholders for improved technical productivity and knowledge transfer.
- Product Development Execution, Monitoring, and Control: Plan, schedule, coordinate, and execute product development activities aligned with requirements and technical profiles; monitor and communicate across functional boundaries to meet project resource and quality expectations.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in an appropriate STEM field, or equivalent experience, is required.
- This position may require licensing for compliance with export controls or sanctions regulations.
- Preferred Skills and Experience:
- Relevant experience in a student employment environment (intern, co-op, extracurricular team activities) or as an early career professional in a relevant technical discipline.
- Proficiency in MS Office and CREO tools.
