Full Job Description

As a Product Systems Design Engineer at Cummins India Limited in Pune, you will be instrumental in managing the product life cycle of automotive components. This role requires proficiency in Creo and Windchill for CAD design and detailing, alongside providing crucial manufacturing and application engineering support. You will leverage your expertise in GD&T and tolerance stack-up analysis, coupled with a foundational understanding of DFMEA, to drive product innovation. This position involves close collaboration with cross-functional teams to investigate and resolve Value Package Introduction (VPI) program or field-based issues, identifying causal mechanisms, and owning design-centric problem resolution. You will apply and support processes such as Critical Design Decisions, System Design and Validation Consideration Checklist, Design Review, and tools including iDFMEA, DVA, GD&T, CREO, and ANSYS Workbench. A key aspect of this role is to obtain input from and negotiate with technical experts and senior designers across various disciplines to effectively communicate component and subsystem design intent. You will support critical design decision-making in concept selection, optimization, and specification development, taking ownership of problem resolution for moderately complex components, products, systems, subsystems, or services. This role offers opportunities for independent execution of established work processes and systems while fostering technology and product knowledge development. You will also contribute to the improvement of systems and processes and coordinate work among technicians and temporary student employees.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage the product life cycle of automotive components.
  • Utilize Creo and Windchill CAD design and detailing skills.
  • Provide manufacturing engineering support.
  • Offer application engineering support.
  • Apply GD&T and perform tolerance stack-up analysis.
  • Demonstrate basic DFMEA knowledge.
  • Interact with cross-functional teams.
  • Investigate Value Package Introduction (VPI) program team or field-based issues, understand causal mechanisms, recommend appropriate action, and own problem resolution from a design perspective.
  • Apply and support the execution of processes such as Critical Design Decisions, System Design and Validation Consideration Checklist, Design Review, and tools such as iDFMEA, DVA, GD&T, CREO, and ANSYS Workbench.
  • Obtain input and negotiate with cross-functional and cross-discipline technical experts and senior-level designers to communicate the component and subsystem design intent.

  • Provide independent execution of established work processes and systems while developing technology or product knowledge.

  • Coordinate and direct work amongst technicians and/or temporary student employees.

Responsibilities Breakdown:

  • Cross-Functional Design Integration: Translates value package requirements, incorporating stakeholder needs, into virtual designs and communicates design capabilities through approved cross-functional design reviews.
  • Mechanical Design Modeling and Analysis: Creates Computer-Aided Design (CAD) models according to Cummins standards to represent system design concepts and enable various system-level analyses, including Dimensional Variation Analysis and Finite Element Analysis.
  • Mechanical Design of Mechanical Systems: Applies in-depth knowledge of mechanical systems to develop innovative and robust design concepts that meet Cummins and customer expectations.
  • Mechanical Design Specification: Develops comprehensive specifications, including solid models, configured engineering bills of materials, and detailed drawings, to effectively communicate manufacturing and inspection information required to realize the design intent.
  • Product Function Modeling, Simulation, and Analysis: Influences product design decisions by utilizing and interpreting computational tools and methods to predict product functional capability against system, sub-system, and component requirements.
  • System Requirements Engineering: Employs appropriate methods and tools to translate stakeholder needs into verifiable requirements for design development, establishes acceptance criteria for systems through analysis, allocation, and negotiation, and tracks requirement status throughout the system lifecycle.
  • Collaborates: Builds partnerships and works collaboratively with others to achieve shared objectives.
  • Communicates Effectively: Develops and delivers multi-mode communications that clearly convey understanding of diverse audience needs.

  • Technical Documentation: Documents knowledge gained through technical functions and communicates it to stakeholders to enhance technical productivity and knowledge transfer.
  • Product Development Execution, Monitoring, and Control: Plans, schedules, coordinates, and executes product development activities aligned with requirements and technical profiles; monitors and communicates across functional boundaries to meet project resource and quality expectations.

Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor's degree in an appropriate STEM field, or equivalent experience, is required.
  • This position may require licensing for compliance with export controls or sanctions regulations.

Skills and Experience:

  • Preferred candidates will have relevant experience in a temporary student employment environment (intern, co-op, or other extracurricular team activities) or as an early-career professional in a relevant technical discipline.
  • Knowledge of MS Office and CREO tools is also preferred.
