About the Role
As a Principal Software Engineer on Core Pricing, you will provide technical leadership spanning engineering, machine learning, and product organizations. You will shape the long-term architecture and strategy for pricing systems that serve multiple product lines across Upstart.
You will lead the development of scalable, low-latency, highly reliable services that convert ML underwriting outputs into pricing decisions. Working closely with leaders in Personal Loans, Auto, HELOC, and adjacent platforms, you will define the future of our pricing platform as we expand into new markets.
The Tech Stack
Our systems span Python (Django, FastAPI), Kotlin/Spring Boot, gRPC/Protobuf, Temporal, AWS (S3, RDS/Postgres, ElastiCache), Kubernetes/Helm, and Datadog for observability.
Your Impact
- Define the cross-company technical vision and roadmap ensuring alignment across all organizations.
- Lead architectural evolution from tightly coupled workflows to modular, reusable platform capabilities.
- Tier 0/Tier 1 service design where latency, throughput, and financial correctness are critical.
- Create reliable boundaries between ML models and production pricing systems.
- Mentor senior technical leaders and build alignment across Engineering, ML, Product, Data, Security, Compliance, and business partners.
