Piping Material Design Engineer

Mott MacDonald is seeking a skilled Piping Material Design Engineer to join our team in Ahmedabad, Chennai, or Mumbai. The ideal candidate will possess strong proficiency in piping materials and experience in engineering consultancy for industrial design projects, particularly within the chemical, pharmaceutical, and bulk drug sectors.

Key responsibilities include understanding and fulfilling client/project requirements for timely project delivery. A solid grasp of industry codes such as ASME B31.3, ASME B31.12, ASME B31.1, and relevant ASTM, API, and BS standards is essential, along with their practical application in projects.

The role involves expertise in piping material selection and the development of piping service class indexes in collaboration with process engineers. You will be responsible for preparing comprehensive piping specifications for metallic, non-metallic, and lined piping, as well as conducting pipe wall thickness calculations, including external pressure calculations, branch chart calculations, and line blank preparations.

This position requires the ability to develop project standards and technical specifications for piping materials with minimal supervision. You will also prepare Valve Material Specifications and datasheets for various piping special items, including special valves, strainers, traps, sight glasses, bellows, and hoses. The role includes preparing Requests for Quotation (RFQs) for piping bulk items, valves, and specialty items.

Successful candidates will conduct technical evaluations of vendor offers, preparing both technical evaluations and commercial comparisons, and producing technical bid study reports for valves and piping specialties. You will also be tasked with checking and reviewing vendor documents and drawings for valves and piping specialties.

This role involves close collaboration with interfacing, engineering, and construction groups on piping material matters, resolving all piping material-related issues throughout the project lifecycle, and advising on technical deviations proposed by vendors and site contractors. You will identify deviations in job scope and estimate the magnitude of changes, ensuring adherence to quality control procedures.

Effective communication, both verbal and written, is crucial for maintaining a smooth workflow within the Piping Engineering team and with other design, engineering, and purchasing disciplines. Responsibilities also include extracting and handling Piping Material Take-Offs (MTO) for projects, preparing cost estimations for piping bought items and construction activities (Equipment Erection, Piping fabrication/erection, thermal insulation & painting), and developing technical specifications for these construction works.

Additional duties involve preparing Piping MTO & Inch Dia / Inch Metre reports, technical specifications for Thermal Insulation & Painting Works, and estimating Insulation & Painting Bills of Material.

Candidate Specifications:

We are looking for candidates with a BE/ME in Mechanical Engineering from a reputable university. Previous experience in Engineering Consultancy firms, with a background in the Chemical or Pharmaceutical industries, is highly desirable. Proficiency in software like AutoCAD and MS Office is required. The ideal candidate should be dedicated, possess excellent problem-solving abilities, high work ethics, and act responsibly. Adaptability to change, strong teamwork, good communication and interpersonal skills, analytical understanding, and visualization skills are essential. The ability to quickly learn new procedures and develop new systems is also valued.
