About The Role

As a Member of Technical Staff (MTS) in our Engineering team, you will play a key role in developing our healthcare ecosystem. We are seeking a skilled and experienced backend developer to enhance our accessible, high-quality, and sustainable healthcare solutions. This position is centered on backend software development within a Java and AWS-based microservice architecture, operating within an agile framework and involving close collaboration with developers, Leads, Architects, and Product Owners.

The Team - Patient Experience (PEX) & Consumer Messaging

The Patient Experience (PEX) subdivision is dedicated to empowering patients in managing their health and wellness, while simultaneously streamlining workflows for healthcare professionals. The Notification Messaging team specifically focuses on building and maintaining athenahealth's messaging infrastructure, which handles millions of personalized, multi-channel communications daily. This includes:

• Multi-Channel Communication: Developing systems for text messages, emails, push notifications, and phone calls.
• Automated & Tailored Messaging: Creating software that automates critical patient outreach, such as appointment reminders and population health notices.
• Actionable Results: Building solutions that drive patient engagement, leading to improved payment collection, preventative care adoption, and better overall health management.

Our technology stack comprises JavaScript, React, and TypeScript for front-end development, and NodeJS and Java for backend services, all within an AWS microservice-based architecture.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop backend applications utilizing technologies such as Java, Spring, Hibernate, and REST API.
• Write clean, maintainable code adhering to best practices, with a strong emphasis on security, performance, and scalability.
• Deliver valuable software features and services by accurately estimating tasks, debugging effectively, rigorous testing, and reliable code deployment.
• Utilize cloud platforms, specifically AWS, for deploying and managing telehealth infrastructure.
• Collaborate effectively within Agile teams, actively participating in sprint planning, code reviews, and continuous integration and deployment (CI/CD) processes.
• Promptly troubleshoot and resolve production issues, ensuring timely delivery of fixes.

Required Qualifications

• A minimum of 2 years of professional software development experience.
• A strong understanding of data structures, Object-Oriented Programming (OOP), and analytical problem-solving.
• Proficiency in modern backend technologies, including Java, Spring, Hibernate, and RESTful APIs.
• A willingness to work with and understand legacy and monolith systems as part of the overall platform.
• The ability to write robust, scalable, and readable code.
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
• Flexibility to provide occasional support for production issues that may fall within U.S. time zones.

Desired Qualifications

• A Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related STEM field is preferred.
• Experience in designing technical solutions based on product requirements.
• Familiarity with cloud-native development principles, containerization technologies like Docker, and various AWS services.
