Full Job Description
The Mechanical Engineer role at BP's Technical Solutions India (TSI) center in Pune focuses on providing critical technical support for valves, piping, and other static mechanical equipment to the Global Facilities Hardware Team. You will be instrumental in ensuring the availability, maintenance, and consistent application of standardized specifications and requirements, aligned with industry best practices and BP's key learnings.
This position involves close collaboration with projects and operations teams to implement standard valve specifications and datasheets. You will contribute technical expertise on behalf of the Valve Global Product Team, assist projects with call-offs, and ensure standardization activities for valves are meticulously completed. A key aspect of this role will be supporting the ongoing improvement and development of BP's valve procurement strategy, including associated technical and quality requirements.
Furthermore, you will be responsible for investigating valve-related issues, providing expert recommendations for enhancements in valve selection, design, manufacturing, fabrication, operation, and maintenance, and assessing valve anomalies as needed.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide technical expertise to Projects and Operations on valve-related matters, including the evaluation of valve packages and other piping materials.
- Review vendor documentation for accuracy and compliance.
- Offer comprehensive engineering support to Projects throughout their entire lifecycle.
- Support the interpretation of GIS data for valve design and procurement.
- Advise on detailed design, ensuring alignment between project needs and standardization objectives.
- Uphold rigorous engineering standards and practices in all tasks.
- Proactively identify opportunities for improvement through Continuous Improvement and Discipline Excellence initiatives.
- Participate effectively in key Engineering Design Reviews, Project HSSE Reviews, and HAZID/HAZOP reviews within your area of expertise.
- Contribute to valve incident investigations.
- Demonstrate and ensure compliance with all Health, Safety, Security, and Environment (HSSE) expectations.
- Actively engage with the Mechanical Network and Valve Community of Practice.
- Provide support for Front End Engineering (FEED) activities.
- Supervise third-party activities and contractors operating on behalf of the team.
Qualifications and Experience:
- Education: A Degree in Mechanical Engineering or an equivalent qualification is mandatory.
- Certifications: Chartered Engineer or Professional Engineer status, or equivalent, is preferred.
- Experience: A minimum of 8 years of relevant experience in the oil and gas, petrochemical, refining, or chemical industries is required. The total experience range is typically 8-12 years.
- Essential Skills:
- Substantial experience and technical understanding of the engineering, maintenance, and operation of valves, piping, and static mechanical equipment within oil and gas processing facilities.
- In-depth knowledge of valve design, selection, testing, and operation.
- Strong understanding of governing codes, industry standards (e.g., API, ASME, ISO, ASTM), and relevant local regulations for mechanical engineering.
- Proven track record in the practical application of engineering standards and practices for mechanical equipment.
- Experience working with Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) and vendors for valves and piping systems.
- Desirable Skills (Training available):
- Experience working collaboratively within a remote team environment.
- Demonstrated success in risk management for projects and operating facilities.
- Proven ability to engage across various teams and functions to drive central engineering improvements.
- Experience with piping designs and supports, piping stress analysis (e.g., using Caesar), flanged joint designs, integrity assessment and repairs, and industry codes/standards (API, ASME, ISO).
- Experience in brownfield modifications, front-end engineering, scoping, and technical evaluations.
You will collaborate with OEMs, valve suppliers, project teams, finance and procurement personnel, operations staff, and contractors.
Travel: Up to 10% travel may be required for this role.
