Job Summary

This role focuses on interpreting customer technical inquiries to design the most cost-effective overall solutions for High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) installations, leveraging PES power electronics solutions. The primary goal is to minimize total cost and specify key high-value bought-out equipment. The successful candidate will contribute to the development and industrialization of solution tools and processes, bringing proven professional experience and technical expertise in power system engineering.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Insulation Coordination Studies: Determine temporary and transient overvoltage stresses on equipment and surge arrester energy ratings through simulation.
  • Power System Studies: Conduct power system simulations, including steady-state and Electromagnetic Transient (EMT) studies, for projects and tenders.
  • Network Studies: Confirm the correct interaction between equipment, its control system, and the wider network.
  • Reliability and Availability Studies: Create overall reliability and availability models for projects and report findings to clients.
  • Losses Calculation: Calculate overall project losses and provide reports to clients.
  • Provide guidance and coordinate engineering tasks to meet project/tender requirements.
  • Assume technical responsibility within areas of expertise.
  • Development and Industrialization: Develop and industrialize solution tools and processes related to the identified engineering activities.
  • Actively engage in new HVDC technology developments, implementing control and protection solutions, and creating/delivering new analysis techniques and system study tools for optimized solutions.
  • Process Improvement: Review and document design processes, and develop new or improved processes.
  • Enforce engineering discipline and set processes across all work tasks, ensuring adherence to company policies, quality procedures, and work instructions through activities like training and technical reviews.
  • Represent the business in external events by publishing technical papers.
  • Continuously enhance technical knowledge and stay updated with relevant methodologies and technological advancements within the company.
  • Support and mentor other engineers to improve team technical knowledge and competence.
  • Values: Comply with the GE Values Charter.
  • Report or resolve any non-conformances promptly.
  • Identify and evaluate Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) risks in the team area and implement practical mitigation measures.
  • Set an example by demonstrating proper EHS acts, actively observing work conditions and behaviors, providing constructive feedback, and celebrating EHS prevention successes.
  • Actively participate in defining corrective actions when work is unsafe or uncontrolled risks are observed.
  • Routinely observe the routines and behaviors of others, providing immediate feedback on unsafe behavior and celebrating achievements or safe behaviors.
  • Actively and routinely promote the identification of hazards and near misses to their team(s).

Desired Additional Skills

  • Filter Design: Design AC, DC, and high-frequency harmonic filters and screening. Calculate filter performance and rating. Create project-specific equipment specifications for filter reactors, capacitors, and resistors.

Required Qualifications

  • Engineering degree (or equivalent) with a focus on power systems and power electronics (minimum 2:1 classification).
  • Proven professional experience and technical expertise in power system engineering, preferably in HVDC System Design.
  • Knowledge of system simulation tools such as PSCAD, PSS/E, DigSilent, RTDS, and MATLAB.
  • Understanding of insulation coordination and main equipment characteristics for HVDC systems.
  • Expertise in using computer mathematical and simulation tools for the design activities mentioned.
  • Familiarity with power quality issues.
  • General understanding of the characteristics of HVDC Valves and their control systems.
  • Strong presentation skills.

Desired Characteristics

  • Ability to work to deadlines with high quality, demonstrating a sense of urgency and delivery.
  • Good technical communication skills.
  • Self-motivating, proactive, and results-driven approach.
  • Strong problem-solving and root cause identification skills.
  • Commitment to precise documentation.
  • Ability to work effectively as a team player and independently.
  • Professional approach to engineering delivery.
  • 'Right first time' culture and attitude.
