Lead Data Engineer

PayPal Payments Org is seeking highly talented and self-motivated Staff Software Engineers with expertise in Java/J2EE/SQL/Data/Cloud to contribute to its Async Processing (Settlement) domains. This role involves developing platform and product capabilities for the Cost Engine, which calculates and reports fees for Interchange++ merchants. The focus is on modernizing this platform to build new, complex product capabilities that sustain and grow PayPal's business. Key responsibilities include detecting revenue leaks, preventing transaction downgrades, optimizing costs, and delivering measurable savings. Engineers will build dashboards, implement anomaly detection, and provide actionable insights. The role requires developing large-scale platforms, enriching cost estimation, generating daily fee reports, offering flexible merchant settlement models, and providing Cost Engine as a Service. The tech stack includes Linux/Java/J2EE/SoA & Web Services/SQL/Oracle/Kafka/Big Data/Cloud (GCP). Candidates should have a strong understanding of distributed systems, concurrency, and reactive programming, with proficiency in test automation. Experience in payments or related domains and knowledge of AI/ML are highly valued. The position involves technical leadership within an agile team, driving design, code quality, and end-to-end ownership. Collaboration with remote teams and a commitment to PayPal's leadership principles are essential.

Required skills include Bachelor/Master's degree in Computer Science or related field, measurable experience in Apache Spark, and cloud technologies like Google Cloud (GCP). Proficiency in Scala, Python, Java/J2EE/JPA/REST/Spring & Spring Boot/JDBC/SQL/messaging is necessary. Strong SQL query writing abilities, experience with large-scale distributed systems, and test automation are crucial. Familiarity with Spark SQL, DataFrames, Datasets, distributed system concepts, Data analysis using OLAP tools / Big data tech & Google BigQuery, and payments domain experience are must-haves. Knowledge of AI/ML is also required.
