Lead Content Engineer

Role Overview

We are seeking a Lead Content Engineer to drive the design, governance, and evolution of structured exam content within our multidisciplinary technology team. This is a remote-first role with options for hybrid work near offices.

About The Team

The Content Engineering team integrates design, content, and engineering to deliver consistent user experiences across College Board's digital products. We support robust systems that power assessments like the SAT® and AP®, serving diverse creators including assessment authors and developers.

Key Responsibilities

• Own content interchange architecture (30%): Lead quality and integrity for exchanging item content between College Board, external vendors, and legacy systems using QTI standards. Design reusable translation layers to support a global item bank.
• Define validation checkpoints: Ensure structural and metadata loss is caught before production release.
• Lead evolution of a unified content model (30%): Develop structured specifications for downstream form assembly, scoring, and reporting. Balance machine-readable formats (JSON/XML) with human-readable outputs.
• Maintain metadata integrity (30%): Ensure consistency from item authoring through score reporting. Define quality checkpoints across the lifecycle to mitigate risks.
• Cross-functional influence (10%): Act as a strategic liaison between engineering, psychometrics, and content teams. Communicate complex data structures clearly for both technical and non-technical audiences.

About You

You need 5+ years of experience in structured content systems or assessment production with deep understanding of metadata modeling and QTI standards. Experience with JSON/XML integrations is essential. You must be a learner's mindset, collaborative, and mission-driven to expand educational opportunities for all students.
