Role Overview
The HR & People Operations Generalist – India will serve as the local People & Culture partner for LevelUP’s India entity. You will collaborate closely with the Global People & Culture team, Global Payroll Manager, LevelUP’s PEO partner (supporting global payroll and HR operations), and external partners, including benefits providers, to ensure compliant HR operations in India. While payroll processing and core HR systems administration are managed centrally through our PEO platform, this role is crucial for local compliance, enhancing the employee experience, and implementing HR programs.
Furthermore, this position plays a significant role in reinforcing LevelUP’s culture and fostering a positive employee experience for our India team. Given that LevelUP operates with a fully remote workforce in India, this role demands strong knowledge of state-specific employment laws and statutory requirements that may impact compensation structures, statutory benefits, and employment practices.
Key Responsibilities
HR Compliance & Employment Law
- Ensure compliance with Indian labor laws and statutory requirements across relevant states.
- Monitor and advise on state-specific regulatory requirements that may affect employment terms, statutory benefits, and employment practices.
- Maintain awareness of updates to Indian employment legislation and advise the Global People & Culture team accordingly.
- Support the review of compensation structures to ensure alignment with Indian wage regulations and statutory contribution requirements.
- Support the localization of global HR policies and programs to ensure alignment with Indian labor laws and regulatory requirements.
- Maintain compliant employee documentation and statutory employment records.
Statutory Benefits & Compliance Administration
- Support administration of statutory programs including: Provident Fund (PF), Professional Tax (where applicable), Labour Welfare Fund (where applicable), Gratuity, and Maternity Benefit Act and other statutory leave requirements.
- Support the administration and ongoing compliance of Provident Fund (PF) contributions, including coordination with payroll and maintaining required documentation. Familiarity with EPFO reporting processes and contribution requirements is preferred.
- Partner with the Global Payroll Manager to ensure statutory contributions are accurately administered through payroll.
- Assist with documentation and compliance requirements associated with statutory programs.
- Coordinate with LevelUP’s benefits broker and the global People & Culture team to support administration of employee benefit programs in India.
Payroll & HR Operations Coordination
- Partner with the Global Payroll Manager and LevelUP’s PEO partner to support payroll operations for India employees.
- Coordinate with the PEO partner on HR administration and employee lifecycle processes, including onboarding, offboarding, and employment documentation.
- Validate payroll inputs and flag compliance considerations or statutory requirements.
- Assist with employee communication regarding payroll, statutory deductions, and benefits.
Employee Lifecycle Support
- Partner with the Global People & Culture team to support onboarding and offboarding processes administered through the PEO platform.
- Maintain employee records and employment documentation.
- Support the preparation, review, and maintenance of employment agreements, contract documentation, and employee records.
- Assist with the localization and administration of employee policies and handbook provisions applicable to employees in India.
- Help ensure employment documentation and policies remain aligned with Indian labor law and statutory requirements.
- Provide HR guidance to employees and managers regarding HR policies, employment terms, and workplace practices.
- Support probation management, employment confirmations, and contract documentation.
People & Culture Initiatives
- Partner with the Global People & Culture team to support the rollout of employee engagement and culture initiatives within India.
- Help reinforce LevelUP’s core values of Drive, Collaboration, and Trust through local People & Culture programs.
- Support the implementation of global programs related to: performance management, employee engagement and feedback initiatives, and career development programs.
- Collaborate with the Learning & Development (L&D) team to coordinate training initiatives and development programs for employees in India.
- Provide local insights and feedback to ensure global People & Culture programs are relevant and effective for employees in India.
- Support internal communications and engagement initiatives that strengthen connection within a remote workforce environment.
- Assist in building and scaling People & Culture processes and policies as the LevelUP India entity grows.
POSH Compliance & Workplace Governance
- Support the implementation and administration of the POSH (Prevention of Sexual Harassment) framework.
- Assist with establishing and administering the Internal Committee (IC) when required by law.
- Ensure appropriate POSH policy awareness and training requirements are supported.
HR Audits & Regulatory Readiness
- Support HR compliance reviews and regulatory audits as required.
- Maintain documentation required for statutory inspections or labor authority inquiries.
- Assist with preparation of documentation required for statutory filings or regulatory reviews.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field.
- 7-10 years of HR generalist experience in India within a multinational or global organization.
- Strong knowledge of Indian labor laws, statutory benefits, and employment regulations.
- Exposure to employment regulations for other Asian countries.
- Understanding of state-specific employment regulations in India, including how variations in state laws may impact statutory contributions, compensation structures, and employment practices.
- Experience supporting employment contracts, HR policies, and employee handbook documentation within India.
- Practical experience supporting statutory compliance programs such as Provident Fund (PF), gratuity, and other required employee benefit programs.
- Experience supporting payroll coordination and statutory benefits administration.
- Experience supporting remote or distributed workforces across multiple Indian states.
- Experience working within multinational or globally distributed organizations, supporting alignment between global policies and local employment regulations.
- Strong organizational and problem-solving skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
- Ability to work independently in a globally distributed organization.
Preferred Experience
- Experience supporting new entity setup or early-stage HR operations in India.
- Experience working with global HR teams and international organizations.
- Familiarity with HR or payroll platforms such as Deel, ADP, or similar systems.
