Full Stack Developer

The Role

BookLeaf Publishing is seeking a dynamic Full-Stack Developer to take full ownership of our technology stack. This role involves architecting and developing our customer-facing author dashboard, internal operations tools, and AI-powered automations and integrations. You will play a key part in shaping the author experience on the BookLeaf platform.

This position is at the nexus of product engineering and AI integration, focusing on building and enhancing web applications and implementing intelligent workflows using AI APIs and automation platforms.

What You'll Do

• Build & Scale Web Applications: Design, develop, and maintain our author-facing dashboard, internal tools, and operations software, taking features from conception to production.
• AI & LLM Integration: Integrate AI capabilities, including connecting platforms like OpenAI, building intelligent automations, managing API keys, and ensuring reliable AI-powered features in production.
• Automation & Workflow Engineering: Design and manage automation pipelines using tools like n8n, integrating databases, APIs, payment systems, and third-party services.
• API Development & Integration: Build and consume RESTful APIs, integrate third-party services (payment gateways, print APIs, distribution platforms), and ensure robust data flow across systems.
• Database & Infrastructure: Manage databases, optimize queries, handle deployments, and ensure system performance, security, and scalability.
• Technical Leadership: Evaluate architecture decisions, recommend tools and frameworks, mentor junior developers, and establish best practices for code quality and documentation.
• Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with the founding team to translate business requirements into technical solutions and communicate technical trade-offs to non-technical stakeholders.

What We're Looking For

• Strong full-stack development experience with proficiency in frontend (React, Next.js, or similar) and backend (Node.js, Python, or similar) technologies.
• Hands-on experience with AI/ML integration, including working with LLM APIs (OpenAI, Anthropic, etc.), building AI-powered features, prompt engineering, and deploying AI in production.
• Experience with automation platforms like n8n, Make, or Zapier, including building complex multi-step workflows and error handling.
• Solid understanding of databases (SQL and/or NoSQL), API design (REST, webhooks), authentication systems, and cloud infrastructure.
• Demonstrated ability to own projects end-to-end, from scoping and architecture through deployment and monitoring.
• Familiarity with Bubble (or willingness to learn it quickly) for maintaining and improving the existing platform while planning for a code-based migration.
• Excellent problem-solving skills and a track record of building clean, maintainable, and well-documented systems.
• Strong communication skills for articulating technical concepts and collaborating effectively in a startup environment.

Bonus Points

• Experience with payment gateway integrations (Razorpay, Stripe).
• Familiarity with e-commerce platforms (Shopify) and print-on-demand workflows.
• Experience with DevOps practices: CI/CD, containerization, VPS management.
• Understanding of publishing, media, or content industry workflows.
• Prior experience in a startup environment requiring broad responsibilities.
