Full Job Description

About the Role

This Data Analyst position at MDMY (a client of Uplers) offers a unique opportunity to investigate complex industrial sensor data and uncover underlying operational questions. Unlike typical analyst roles, you'll be presented with datasets and tasked with formulating hypotheses and driving the investigation yourself. You will work with multi-channel sensor data (speed, pressure, temperature, flow rates, vibration, efficiency) from industrial equipment, identifying patterns and explaining performance degradations or anomalies.

The impact of your work is significant, as your findings can save substantial costs for clients operating assets worth hundreds of millions of dollars. While a specific domain background isn't required, an investigative instinct and the ability to systematically approach undefined problems are crucial. You will have access to AI tools and a platform to aid your learning and analysis.

Key Responsibilities

Data Investigation & Root Cause Exploration (50%)

  • Investigate open-ended analytical questions on client operational data.
  • Pull and structure raw sensor data for relevant time windows and channels.
  • Formulate and test hypotheses about observed behaviors or anomalies.
  • Conduct exploratory analyses (distributions, correlations, time-series decompositions, multivariate comparisons).
  • Document investigation approaches, findings, and reasoning clearly.
  • Collaborate with domain engineers to validate findings.

Performance & Efficiency Analysis (25%)

  • Answer quantitative questions about equipment operation relative to potential.
  • Analyze relationships between operating variables to identify efficiency patterns.
  • Build operating-point analyses and identify degradation patterns.
  • Translate findings into actionable recommendations for engineering and operations teams.

Visualisation & Communication (15%)

  • Create visualizations that communicate complex data to non-data scientist audiences.
  • Present findings clearly, outlining the investigation, outcomes, and recommendations.
  • Produce written summaries for institutional knowledge.

Analysis Infrastructure & Reusability (10%)

  • Document successful analysis patterns for reuse.
  • Contribute to the shared knowledge base of equipment behavior and analytical approaches.
  • Identify opportunities for analysis automation and templating.

What Success Looks Like

  • First 30 days: Familiarity with data structure and tools; completion of a first independent investigation.
  • First 60 days: Independent handling of investigation requests; clear and useful analysis outputs; building domain fluency.
  • First 6 months: Reliable analytical resource; fast investigation turnaround; analyses informing real decisions; building repeatable frameworks.

Your success will be measured by becoming the go-to person for any open-ended data questions about client equipment.

Qualifications

Must-Have

  • 2+ years in data analysis with experience in formulating investigations, not just executing predefined queries.
  • Strong Python for data analysis (pandas, matplotlib/plotly, scipy).
  • Hypothesis-driven approach to data anomalies.
  • Comfort with ambiguity and turning undefined problems into structured investigations.
  • Time-series data experience.
  • SQL proficiency.

Strong Signals

  • Experience communicating findings to non-data scientists.
  • Basic signal processing knowledge.
  • Familiarity with multivariate analysis techniques.
  • Engineering degree or coursework.
  • Experience with IoT, sensor, or operational data.
  • Experience in an IoT, energy, or manufacturing company.

The Right Mindset

  • Investigative by default.
  • Rigorous, not exhaustive.
  • Domain-curious.
  • Clear communicator.
  • Self-directed.
