Critical Environment Technician at Microsoft

Join Microsoft's Cloud Operations & Innovation (CO+I) team as a Critical Environment Technician (CET) and play a vital role in maintaining the essential infrastructure that powers our global datacenters. You will be instrumental in ensuring the uninterrupted operation of critical facilities, overseeing everything from vendor coordination and workplace safety to hands-on equipment maintenance and incident response.

As part of CO+I, you will contribute to the core infrastructure supporting Microsoft's iconic online services like Bing, Office 365, Xbox, OneDrive, and Microsoft Azure. Responsibilities:

• Serve as an operations specialist in key areas of Critical Environment (CE) operations (e.g., electrical, mechanical, controls, generators), undertaking advanced tasks independently.
• Conduct regular inspections of critical environment facility equipment (e.g., controls, HVAC, mechanical systems), buildings, and grounds to identify and escalate any unsafe or abnormal conditions according to established policies and standards.
• Utilize our internal Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) for equipment asset tracking and to manage maintenance work orders.
• Respond promptly and effectively to onsite incidents, leading response teams for abnormal operational conditions and collaborating with other critical facilities professionals for corrective repairs.
• Contribute to the enhancement and development of Emergency Operating Procedures (EOPs), Methods of Procedure (MOPs), and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) related to CE operations and incident management.
• Perform various maintenance types (planned, predictive, corrective) and repairs on electrical, mechanical, and cooling systems, adhering strictly to MOPs and SOPs, with minimal supervision.
• Develop a hands-on understanding of equipment functionality and independently troubleshoot systems, subsystems, and components within your trained discipline.
• Provide guidance and consultation to junior colleagues on system troubleshooting and problem-solving.
• Ensure strict adherence to all safety and security requirements, including Job Hazard Assessments (JHAs), Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) protocols, and toolbox talks, to maintain safe, high-quality, and reliable operations within Microsoft standards.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications:

• High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent AND 1+ year of work experience in mission-critical services or applied learning (e.g., high-availability assembly/manufacturing, critical infrastructure environments like data centers, oil and gas refineries, hospitals, pharmaceutical manufacturing, or related fields).
• Or equivalent experience.

Background Check Requirements:

This role requires the ability to meet Microsoft, customer, and/or government security screening requirements. This includes passing the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire and every two years thereafter.

Preferred Qualifications:

• High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent AND 3+ years of mission-critical services experience (e.g., high-availability assembly/manufacturing, critical infrastructure environments like data centers, oil and gas refineries, hospitals, pharmaceutical manufacturing, or related fields).
• Or Associate's Degree or technical trade certification (e.g., military, trade school), or higher-equivalent education AND 3+ years of mission-critical services experience (e.g., high-availability assembly/manufacturing, critical infrastructure environments like data centers, oil and gas refineries, hospitals, pharmaceutical manufacturing, or related fields).
• Or equivalent experience.
