Job Summary:
As a Component Engineer at Aptiv, you will be responsible for the selection, quality, and reliability of parts used in our innovative products. You will act as an in-house specialist for component portfolios, defining and maintaining commodity strategies to leverage appropriate technology parts. This role involves close collaboration with design engineers, commodity specialists, and vendor personnel to resolve issues. You will also investigate alternative component technologies and suppliers to optimize cost while enhancing component quality and reliability.
Key Responsibilities:
- Manage component selection and obsolescence.
- Provide expert component-level consultation to design engineers.
- Take ownership of components, including requirements review, selection, usage, and issue resolution.
- Apply comprehensive component application knowledge.
- Develop and maintain roadmaps for semiconductor parts and their applications for future technologies and products.
- Analyze specific requirements from product teams to select optimal components for customer RFQs (component & system).
- Conduct failure analysis and corrective actions with suppliers.
- Analyze component failure trends to drive improvements.
- Design, execute, and document qualification tests for new electronic components.
- Assist in identifying and resolving manufacturing problems.
- Manage and create standard component qualification processes as needed.
- Facilitate communication and collaboration between suppliers and design teams.
- Support the purchasing team during negotiations and part creation.
- Oversee BOM (Bill of Materials) health management.
- Develop and review technical documentation, including design specifications, test plans, and manufacturing instructions.
Qualifications and Experience:
- Minimum 25 years of experience as a Component Engineer specializing in semiconductor components or as an Applications Engineer in the semiconductor industry.
- Expertise in identifying suitable alternate components for electrical designs.
- Proficient knowledge of passive and active electronic components.
- Experience with product families and technology roadmaps.
- Strong technical understanding of semiconductor component manufacturing, quality, and reliability.
- Familiarity with IC design, fabrication processes, construction techniques, applications, and critical specifications impacting performance and reliability.
- Awareness of ESD, MSL, RoHS, and REACH electronic component compliance requirements.
- Proven experience in preparing customer and management-level briefings.
- Capability in performing gap analysis of test results and validating components against performance criteria, including stress, fatigue, and environmental testing.
- Skilled in addressing and resolving design and production issues, including troubleshooting and root cause analysis.
- Ability to provide technical support to other departments, such as production and quality assurance.
- Experience in preparing and presenting technical documentation, including design specifications, test reports, and manufacturing instructions.
- Experience collaborating with suppliers to evaluate and select components, considering quality, cost, and lead-time.
- Ability to evaluate supplier performance and drive improvements in product quality and delivery.
- Ensure component compliance with quality standards, regulatory requirements, and industry specifications.
- Experience conducting Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA).
- Experience implementing continuous improvement initiatives in design and manufacturing processes.
Preferred Skills:
- Strong understanding of mechanical design principles, material science, and manufacturing processes.
- Proficiency in component lifecycle management and Design for Manufacturability (DFM).
- Familiarity with quality control processes and industry standards (e.g., ISO, ASTM).
- Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to perform root cause analysis.
