Full Job Description

We are seeking an entry-level/early career professional for a dual applied science/product systems focused position as a Combustion and Emissions Systems Engineer in Pune. This role leverages core competencies in thermal and fluid sciences within the specialized areas of combustion and emissions science. You will utilize and advance analytical and experimental approaches to address key questions regarding system or component performance and architecture, driving decisions and creating technical content that leads to state-of-the-art, highly effective, environmentally friendly, and competitive products.

Key Responsibilities include investigating product, system, and technology problems related to thermal and fluid sciences, understanding causal mechanisms, recommending actions, and owning problem resolution with guidance. You will apply and support process improvements for Pre Program Planning (PPP), Product Preceding Technology (PPT), Value Package Introduction (VPI), Value Package Change (VPC), Engineering Standard Work (ESW), and Functional Excellence Practices (FEPs). Proficiency with thermal and fluid sciences tools such as GT-Power, Fluent, Converge, Concerto, CyberApps, Cummins Data Analysis Tool (CDAT), Mach, test data calculation, DARTS, test data storage, Calterm, Emissions data system, Integrity, and ACCEPTS ECM in-loop test bench is required to support processes and enable high-quality decision-making.

You will obtain input and negotiate with immediate stakeholders, including team members, technical managers, project leaders, other Thermal Science engineers, product and manufacturing engineers, and supplier partners. You will deliver information and recommendations to support project decisions, further analysis, design optimization, feasibility studies, or architecture definition. Decisions will be made regarding day-to-day project details, such as conducting analysis, testing, and stakeholder communication, to ensure successful project progression. You will own problem resolution for moderately complex components, products, systems, subsystems, or services, with increasing technical complexity and ambiguity as you gain experience. Independent execution of established work processes and systems is expected, alongside engagement in system and process improvement. This role involves minimal direct management of people but may include coordinating and directing the work of technicians and/or temporary student employees. You will contribute effectively to team goals, exhibit influence within a work group, and continue to develop proficiency in critical competency areas.

  • Applies Principles of Fluid Dynamics and Heat Transfer: Interprets and predicts the performance of fluid and thermal systems using quantitative and intuitive comprehension of fluid flow, thermal energy transfer, and application of modeling and experimental tools.
  • Applies Principles of Thermodynamics and Energy Conversion Systems: Interprets and predicts the performance of energy conversion systems (e.g., IC engines, fuel cells) using quantitative and intuitive comprehension of thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, modeling tools, controls, and experimental tools.
  • Product Failure Mode Avoidance: Mitigates potential product failure modes by identifying interfaces, functions, interactions, and prioritizing failure modes and causes to improve product reliability.
  • Product Function Modeling, Simulation and Analysis: Impacts product design decisions through the utilization and/or interpretation of computational tools and methods that predict product function capability against requirements.
  • Product Problem Solving: Solves product problems using a process that protects the customer, determines assignable causes, implements robust solutions, and identifies systemic root causes to prevent recurrence.

Education, Licenses, Certifications:

A Bachelor's degree in Engineering or an appropriate STEM field is required. A Master's degree relevant to this discipline area may be required for select roles. This position may require licensing for compliance with export controls or sanctions regulations.

Experience:

This is an entry-level/early career professional position. Preferred candidates will have relevant experience in a temporary student employment environment (intern, co-op, or other extracurricular team activities) or as an early career professional in a relevant technical discipline. Knowledge of MS Office tools is also preferred. Qualifications include fundamental knowledge of diesel engine combustion performance, basic knowledge of aftertreatment systems for emission norms, good analytical skills (Excel, Matlab are an advantage), good communication skills (verbal and written), and strong teamwork abilities.
