The University of Minnesota, a distinguished public research university in Minneapolis, MN, seeks an experienced Books Assistant Department Manager to lead its course materials department. This role involves comprehensive oversight of procurement and operational management, with a focus on mentoring staff and upholding academic standards. Responsibilities include staff development, serving as Manager on Duty for bookstore operations (including nights and weekends), and consulting on vendor integrations for physical and digital materials. The manager will lead the department in applying University purchasing policies and retail methodologies, managing the acquisition of diverse product categories like traditional textbooks, digital course materials (IA/EA), and custom publications. Key duties involve negotiating terms with publishers and digital aggregators, developing "just-in-time" procurement strategies based on enrollment data, and coordinating with faculty for timely course material adoptions. Analysis of market trends, particularly the shift to digital, and adjustments to procurement strategies are crucial. The role also entails monitoring financial performance (gross margins, inventory turnover), resolving complex discrepancies, and attending industry events to stay abreast of digital delivery standards. Related duties assigned by the Department Manager are also expected. This is a full-time, onsite position.
