Backend Lead Engineer - United States
About This Role:We are seeking an experienced Backend Lead Engineer to provide technical leadership for our API team. In this critical position, you will translate architectural vision into scalable, production-ready APIs and services that integrate healthcare standards like FHIR. You will enable secure deployments on GCP, support AI-driven workflows via MCP wrappers, and collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure the security, reliability, and interoperability of our platform.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead API design and implementation for internal services, partner integrations, and FHIR-based interoperability workflows including resource mapping and validation.
- Tech translate architecture and security standards into concrete service patterns, interface contracts, and coding standards.
- Spearhead the technical implementation of MCP wrappers to enable AI-driven agents to safely access approved tools and data.
- Conduct rigorous design and code reviews while mentoring backend, DevOps, and QA team members.
- Collaborate with architects to enforce security best practices, auditability, tenant isolation, and operational reliability across GCP deployments (Cloud Run, GKE, Pub/Sub, etc.).
Qualifications:
- Experience Required: 7-10 years of backend or API engineering experience with proven technical leadership.
- API Expertise: Proven expertise in designing RESTful APIs, service contracts, versioning strategies, and scalability patterns using Java (Spring Boot).
- FHIR & Healthcare: Hands-on experience with FHIR APIs and healthcare interoperability standards within regulated environments.
- AI Integration: Experience building/exposing APIs to support AI or agent-based workflows; familiarity with Model Context Protocol (MCP) is strongly preferred.
- GCP Proficiency: Strong proficiency with GCP services including Cloud Run, GKE, Pub/Sub, Cloud SQL, API Gateway, IAM, logging, and monitoring.
Preferred Experience:
- Architecture & Events: Background in event-driven architectures, asynchronous processing patterns, and containerization (Docker) with orchestration via Kubernetes on GCP.
- Security Standards: Deep knowledge of API security best practices including OAuth2, JWT tokens, encryption (in transit/at rest), and tools like Kong or Apigee for gateway management.
- CI/CD & Monitoring: Experience implementing CI/CD pipelines (Jenkins, GitLab CI, Google Cloud Build) and monitoring with Prometheus, Grafana, and ELK Stack.
- Documentation: Mastery of OpenAPI/Swagger for API specification and Postman for testing/documentation.
