Backend Engineer

METRO is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer passionate about technology to contribute to its global wholesale operations. This role focuses on developing products that enhance customer and colleague success, from e-commerce to delivery software. The ideal candidate will be a senior backend engineer with strong Java and Spring Boot expertise, adept at designing and optimizing complex distributed systems. A deep understanding of Camunda/CIB7 and a process-oriented approach are crucial for driving workflow automation at scale. This technical leader will mentor other engineers, influence architecture, and ensure the reliability and scalability of backend systems.

As a Senior Backend Engineer, you will play a key role in METRO’s global Quality Management System, harmonizing quality assurance processes across countries and stores using Camunda for complex workflows. You will guide technical direction and mentor junior engineers.

Key Responsibilities:

• Design, implement, and maintain scalable backend services and APIs, including RESTful and event-driven architectures.
• Lead backend development efforts, guiding design and architecture decisions.
• Mentor and support mid-level engineers, fostering knowledge sharing and technical excellence.
• Ensure the performance, reliability, and security of backend systems.
• Collaborate with architects, frontend engineers, QA, and product managers to deliver integrated solutions.
• Monitor and troubleshoot production systems to ensure stability and continuous improvement.
• Contribute to the long-term technical strategy and innovation in workflow automation and backend architecture.

Qualifications:

• Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
• Work Experience & Skills: Extensive experience with Java and Spring Boot. Proven experience with Camunda; CIB7 knowledge is highly desirable. Strong understanding of microservices architecture and API-first design. Experience with relational and NoSQL databases (PostgreSQL, MongoDB). Proficiency in automated testing. Hands-on experience with Docker, Kubernetes, and CI/CD pipelines. Experience designing scalable, secure, and reliable distributed systems. Excellent English communication skills.

• Nice-to-Have: Experience with Istio or other service mesh technologies, exposure to cloud platforms (GCP, AWS, Azure), experience with observability tools (Prometheus, Grafana, DataDog), knowledge of security best practices (OAuth2, RBAC, mTLS).
