About the Role
Deepgram is seeking a Backend Software Engineer to join our Engine team. In this position, you will lead the design and implementation of Deepgram's core inference services for speech processing, distributed compute orchestration, audio transcoding, latency optimization, and memory management.
You will build highly reusable code that solves complex technical challenges while maintaining an intuition for user experience. Critical responsibilities include improving networking protocols, debugging high-performance computing interactions, optimizing scheduling processes, and rapidly customizing backend services to meet evolving customer needs in the Voice AI sector.
What You'll Do
- Improve Deepgram's core inference services across networking, speech processing, audio transcoding, and latency/memory optimization.
- Develop robust processes for measuring, building, and optimizing system performance to maximize efficiency.
- Debug complex issues involving high-performance computing interactions and distributed systems.
- Rapidly customize backend architectures to support diverse customer requirements in the Voice AI ecosystem.
- Partner with product teams to design and implement new services and features end-to-end.
Who You Are
You thrive in fast-paced, impact-driven environments where continuous learning is essential. You are comfortable making strategic decisions about feature maturity versus detailed design work. It's important that you have 3+ years of industry experience with strong programming skills in Rust (or C/C++) and competence in Python.
Additionally, we value excellent written and verbal communication, comprehensive UNIX-style system experience, familiarity with version control systems like Git, exposure to modern machine learning frameworks such as PyTorch or architectures including CNNs, RNNs, and transformers, and relevant audio processing expertise. Candidates must be adaptable, able to learn new AI tools on the fly, and excited by rapid technological change.
