Backend Engineer E3

BitGo is seeking a Backend Engineer - E3 to join our Developer Experience (DevEx) team. This role is pivotal in empowering developers globally by creating and maintaining essential resources such as SDKs, developer portals, and APIs. These tools are designed to facilitate seamless self-service of our API products with minimal friction for our clients. As a key contributor to BitGo's growth, your work will directly influence engineers and clients, driving innovation and scaling the developer experience.

Responsibilities

• Develop customer-centric quality systems: Design, implement, and manage production-grade internal systems that rigorously test BitGo's APIs from a customer's perspective. Proactively identify potential failure points, prevent regressions before they reach production, and enhance confidence in every release.
• Own API quality and correctness at scale: Develop and enhance monitoring, alerting, and metrics systems to track API drift, breaking changes, and adherence to specifications across the platform. Leverage data to identify risks, prioritize fixes, and achieve measurable improvements in API health.
• Deliver robust developer tooling: Design and deploy CI gates, linters, and automation solutions to catch defects early in the development lifecycle. Your tools will be critical for hundreds of engineers, and you will be responsible for their accuracy, performance, and long-term maintainability.
• Exhibit end-to-end ownership: Independently lead projects from initial problem definition through design, implementation, rollout, and continuous iteration. Produce clear design documentation, make sound technical decisions, and balance development speed with quality.
• Foster cross-functional collaboration: Work closely with product management, infrastructure, security, QA, sales engineering, and customer-facing teams to understand user needs and translate them into impactful technical solutions.
• Elevate engineering standards: Participate in code reviews, technical discussions, and design sessions. Identify systemic issues and propose improvements that enhance the effectiveness of the broader engineering organization.

Requirements

• 6–9 years of professional software engineering experience, with a proven track record of owning production systems.
• Strong command of at least one modern, statically typed or functional programming language (e.g., TypeScript, Rust, Go, Java), with the ability to rapidly become proficient in others.
• Experience in designing and building backend systems or developer tooling, including APIs, CI/CD pipelines, linters, testing infrastructure, or internal platforms.
• Demonstrated capability to work autonomously: Ability to tackle ambiguous problems, clarify requirements, propose solutions, and execute with minimal supervision.
• Solid foundation in system design: Understanding of scalability, reliability, observability, and real-world system trade-offs, with the ability to apply these principles pragmatically.
• Excellent communication skills: Proficient in writing clear design documents, articulating technical trade-offs, and collaborating effectively across diverse teams and time zones.
• A passion for developer experience and leverage: A strong desire to improve the speed, safety, and effectiveness of fellow engineers.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with API developer portals and documentation tooling.
• Familiarity with tools for generating and maintaining OpenAPI specifications.
• Strong data analysis skills, including experience tracking user journeys and using data to drive continuous improvement.
