AI Data Scientist

Johnson Controls is seeking an AI Data Scientist to join our Autonomous Buildings team in Pune, Maharashtra, India. You will play a crucial role in developing and maintaining the AI algorithms and capabilities for our digital products. These applications leverage data from commercial buildings, employing machine learning and advanced algorithms to deliver significant value.

Your work will focus on automating and optimizing building operations to reduce energy consumption, monitoring and controlling indoor air quality for improved occupant wellness, and generating actionable insights to enhance facility manager productivity. You will ensure our AI solutions deliver robust, repeatable outcomes through well-designed algorithms and high-quality software.

Success in this role requires comfort in applying machine learning concepts to practical, real-world datasets and their inherent challenges. We are particularly interested in candidates with experience in autonomous building applications, data-driven decision-making, and real-time optimization. Prior experience with HVAC and building energy systems will be highly advantageous.

Responsibilities:

• Contribute to the AI team's efforts with assigned tasks.
• Collaborate with product managers to design innovative AI capabilities.
• Explore and analyze datasets to identify potential applications.
• Develop Python code for implementing AI capabilities, with a focus on closed-loop optimization.
• Adhere to code-quality standards and software development best practices.
• Create and maintain test cases to validate algorithm correctness.
• Analyze failures to identify root causes and plan bug fixes.
• Communicate key results effectively to stakeholders.
• Utilize JIRA for work planning and issue tracking.

What We Look For:

Required:

• An undergraduate degree in a relevant engineering field (mechanical, electrical, chemical, etc.) or computer science.
• Four years of experience in applied data science or AI product development.
• Proficiency in reading, writing, and troubleshooting Python code.
• Competence with Python data-science packages such as Numpy, Scipy, Pandas, Scikit-Learn, Keras, Tensorflow, and Pytorch.
• A solid understanding of machine learning algorithms and techniques, including regression, classification, clustering, and deep learning.
• Familiarity with optimal-control strategies like dynamic programming, model-predictive control, and reinforcement learning.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Nice to Have:

• A graduate degree in a relevant engineering field (mechanical, electrical, chemical, etc.) or computer science.
• Six years of experience in applied data science or AI product development.
• Familiarity with HVAC systems and smart buildings.
• Knowledge of thermodynamics and mass/energy balances.
• Proficiency in optimal-control strategies (e.g., dynamic programming, model-predictive control, reinforcement learning).
• Familiarity with numerical optimization techniques (e.g., linear/nonlinear programming, mixed-integer linear programming, metaheuristics).
• Experience with generative AI.
• Familiarity with Python web frameworks and tools like FastAPI and Pydantic.
• Experience with collaboration tools such as Jira, Sharepoint, and Teams.
• Experience with version control systems like Git and Github.
