The Unit Clerk plays a vital role in the Pediatric ICU unit, performing essential clerical and receptionist duties to ensure smooth unit operations and foster positive guest relations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform receptionist functions including answering telephones promptly and professionally, responding to call bells via intercom, and activating the paging system for routine and emergency needs.
- Coordinate patient admissions, transfers, and discharges efficiently with all relevant departments.
- Uphold the principles of positive guest relations in all interactions.
- Utilize the TDS computer system competently for written order entry, report retrieval, and updating patient census information for admissions, transfers, and discharges.
- Document and update patient allergies, conditions, transport needs, and dietary restrictions accurately within the system.
- Accept and schedule patient appointments, photocopy medical records in accordance with hospital policy, and maintain a log of unit activities.
- Adhere strictly to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital policies and procedures regarding dress code, punctuality, mandatory training, meeting attendance, ID badge usage, and patient confidentiality.
- Apply knowledge and skills relevant to the specific patient population served on the assigned unit.
- Demonstrate excellent communication and customer service skills tailored to the patient population.
- Maintain awareness of and actively participate in patient safety initiatives, including National Patient Safety Goals, regulatory standards, and unit-specific safety programs.
- Engage in infection prevention activities and at least one other patient safety initiative, demonstrating understanding and compliance with RWJUH protocols.
- Practice proper handwashing techniques and contribute to unit-specific infection prevention projects.
- Ensure all handwritten information is clear and readable.
- Comply with the current RWJUH Prohibited Abbreviations, Acronyms, and Symbol listing.
- Report errors, high-risk events, and near-misses to the immediate supervisor for appropriate action.
- Successfully complete online patient safety educational programs with a minimum score of 80%.
- Understand and apply information communicated through newsletters, bulletin boards, and memos.
