Packaging Engineer Supervisor

PCI Pharma Services is seeking a dedicated and experienced Packaging Engineer Supervisor to lead our Package Testing Services team in Rockford, IL. This critical role involves overseeing the development and performance qualifications of packaging systems, ensuring product integrity, and optimizing packaging solutions for the global pharmaceutical market.

As a supervisor, you will be responsible for effectively planning, delegating, and overseeing the daily activities of Package Testing Engineers and interns. Your commitment will ensure that testing services meet schedule, budget, and quality/regulatory standards. You will also support strategies for expanding and sustaining team core competencies and fostering a culture of ongoing training and Subject Matter Expert (SME) development.

Key responsibilities include creating and facilitating standard work instructions for package performance testing, developing and managing the operational and maintenance (O&M) plan for package testing equipment, and coordinating/monitoring off-site testing activities while maintaining strong business relationships with external suppliers and consultants. You will leverage your expertise to recommend, specify, and validate new packaging designs and evaluate existing package designs using standard methods and procedures. Engaging directly with customers to assess their current packaging systems and recommend optimal solutions is a core function.

This role demands a thorough understanding of current industry standards for package performance testing, including Distribution Simulation (ASTM, D4169, ISTA & ISO), Shipping Lane Qualification, Human Factors, Usability, Child Resistance, and Adult Friendly testing. You will collaborate closely with various functional teams such as Sales, Estimation, Project Management, Purchasing, and Engineering to support the quoting, winning, and execution of Design Services and Commercial Packaging projects.

You may utilize advanced software for designing and evaluating packaging components and complete systems, including performing life cycle analysis and environmental impact evaluations. A crucial part of the role involves reviewing and editing structural elements to meet customer requests and PCI operational requirements, as well as performing feasibility studies in the on-site Package Testing Lab, managing equipment maintenance, and ensuring safety practices.

Maintaining a digital asset library of industry standards and regulations related to package performance testing, and ensuring its currency, is also expected. This position may require overtime and/or weekend work and necessitates knowledge of and adherence to all PCI, cGMP, and GCP policies and procedures. Attendance is an essential function of this position.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Packaging Engineering and/or 7+ years of related experience and/or training.
