Full Job Description

Scholastic, a leading publisher committed to children's literacy and education, seeks a talented Editor for our New York, NY office. This full-time, hybrid role involves the creative direction and management of over 30 children's nonfiction and licensed media books annually. You will guide projects from initial concept through to final publication, ensuring exceptional quality and adherence to deadlines. This is a unique opportunity to shape engaging content for young audiences.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Edit and develop 30+ books per year across various formats including board books, novelty books, hardcovers, paperbacks, RLBs, book "plus" formats, activity books/kits, and other special formats for Scholastic’s proprietary distribution channels and Trade.
  • Oversee all production stages from concept to publication, guaranteeing timely delivery of high-quality content.
  • Identify, recruit, and manage authors and/or packagers. Negotiate contracts, costs, and payment terms with contributors, with guidance from the Executive Director.
  • Monitor and coordinate workflow among writers, designers, manufacturing, packagers, photo research, marketing, and art departments to meet publishing deadlines.
  • Serve as the US editor for select international projects.
  • Manage the licensor approval process, securing all necessary assets, submitting files for approval, and communicating feedback to Production and Design teams.
  • Proactively research and acquire new brands, authors, ideas, and content. Prepare and present compelling pitches to stakeholders and conduct market research by meeting with channel buyers to assess product needs and trends.
  • Create and manage project budgets, obtain approvals, and track project P&Ls, contract requests, and invoices.
  • Develop fact sheets and seasonal catalogs for internal use.
  • Assist in the management and mentorship of the Editorial Assistant and oversee freelance editors as needed.
